Tomato thokku ( south Indian style)

 



Ingredients

Tomatoes ( big ones)—4
Tamarind ( hunase hannu//imli)—small lemon size
Dry red chillies (ona menasina kayi//lal mirch)—5
Salt—to taste

Oil—2 tablespoon 
Mustard seeds (sasive)—1 teaspoon 
Curry leaves (karibevu//kadipatta)—few
Hing (asafoetida//ingu)—1 teaspoon 

For masala powder

Sasive ( mustard seeds)—2 teaspoon 
Menthya kaalu (methi dana//fenugreek seeds)—1 teaspoon 
Cumin seeds (jeerige//jeera)—1 teaspoon 

Dry roast the above ingredients and powder it.and keep it aside.

Method 

Wash and chop tomatoes into small pieces.

Take a thick bottomed kadai or pan,add tomatoes and saute for few minutes on medium flame.
Then add tamarind,red chillies and cover and cook until tomatoes turns soft and mushy.
Keep stirring in between.
Add salt and roasted masala powder and mix well.
Let the mixture cool completely.

Transfer the cooled mixture to a mixer grinder jar and blend to smooth paste.
Transfer the mixture to a bowl.

Prepare for seasoning (oggarane)

Heat oil in a pan or laddle,once hot add sasive,hing ,curry leaves.
When it crackles pour over thokku (chutney) and mix well.

Serve tasty thokku with dosa,idli,chapattis,rotti,rice etc. 
you can store in an airtight container and refrigerate for longer shelf life.
