Oats uppittu ( upma)
Ingredients
Oats—2 cups
Water—2 cups
Onion ( irulli//pyaz)—2 medium sized
Green chillies (hasiru menasina kayi//hari mirch)—3 to 4
Ginger (shunti//adarak)—small piece
Curry leaves (karibevu//kadipatta)—few
Lemon juice (nimbe rasa)—1 tablespoon
Fresh grated coconut (kayi turi)—1 tablespoon
Salt—to taste
Coriander leaves (kothambari soppu)—1 tablespoon
Vegetables
Green Peas (batani)—1/4 cup
Simla mirch ( dappa menasina kayi)—1 ( yellow //green //red)
Carrot —1/2
You can add vegetables of your choice.( beans etc)
For seasoning (oggarane)
Oil—2 tablespoon
Sasive (mustard seeds//rai)—1 teaspoon
Jeera (jeerige//cumin seeds)—1 teaspoon
Hing (asafoetida//ingu)—1/4 teaspoon
Kadale belle (channa dhal)—1 tablespoon
Uddina belle (urad dhal)—1 tablespoon
Arisina (turmeric powder//haldi)—1/2 teaspoon
Method
Firstly dry roast oats on low medium flame for 4 to 5 minutes or till turns to light brown colour.
Transfer to a plate and let it cool completely.
Chop all vegetables and onion .
Heat oil in a pan or kadai on medium flame.
Once hot enough add sasive,jeerige when it crackles add kadale belle and uddina belle and saute till dhals turns brown.
Then add hing,arisina and sauté.
Next add onion,green chillies chopped and karibevu.
Sauté till onions turns soft and translucent.
Next add all the other vegetables and saute .
When done add two cups of water ,salt and let it boil.
When water starts boiling add cooled and roasted oats and mix gently.
Cover with a lid and simmer for few minutes till oats cooked well
Finally add coconut,lemon juice,coriander leaves and mix well .
Serve hot oats uppittu.
