Alasande kaalu (black eyed beans) usli


 

Ingredients 

Alasande kaalu (black eyed beans//lobia)—1 cup (boiled)
Onion chopped finely (irulli//pyaz)—1 cup
Fresh grated coconut (kayi turi// nariyal)—2 tablespoon 
Green chillies (hasiru menasina kayi)—2
Red  chillies (ona menasina kayi)—2
Curry leaves (karibevu//kadipatta)—few
Chopped coriander leaves (kothambari soppu)—2 tablespoon 
Lemon juice—1 tablespoon 
Salt -to taste
Jaggery powder (Bella//gud)—1 teaspoon 

For  seasoning (oggarane)

Oil—-2 tablespoon 
Sasive (mustard seeds)—1 teaspoon 
Jeera (jeerige// cumin seeds)—1 teaspoon 
Channa dhal ( kadale belle)—1 tablespoon 
Uddina belle (urad dhal)—1 tablespoon 
Asafoetida (hing//ingu)—1 teaspoon 

Method

Firstly wash and soak alasande kaalu in water for 2 hours (soaking is optional)
Cook soaked alasande kaalu in pressure cooker for 3 whistles.
Alasande kaalu will get cooked fast even without soaking 
( You can also transfer the washed kaalu in pressure cooker and add sufficient water and cook for 6 to 7 whistles.)
Do not add salt while cooking.

Now heat oil in a pan or kadai,once’s hot enough add sasive,jeerige and sauté on medium flame.
When it splutters add kadale belle and uddina belle,hing and saute for a minute.
Add in chopped green and red chillies,curry leaves and saute.
Next add in chopped onion and sauté till onions turns translucent and soft.
Then add in boiled alasande kaalu,salt,jaggery powder,coconut  and and stir till everything mixes well for 4 to 5 minutes.
Finally add chopped coriander leaves,lemon juice and mix well.
Switch off the stove.
Delicious usli is ready to serve.
