Alasande kaalu ( black eyed beans) saaru

 


Ingredients 

Alasande kaalu ( lobia// black eyed beans)—1cup (boiled)

Fresh grated coconut (kayi turi//nariyal)—1/2 cup
Onion (irulli//pyaz)—1 medium sized 
Rasam powder (saarina pudi)—3 tablespoon 
Jeera (jeerige//cumin seeds)—1 tablespoon 
Tamarind soaked (hunase hannu//imli)—small lemon sized 
Salt—to taste
Jaggery powder—1 tablespoon 

Method 

Firstly wash and soak alasande kaalu in water for 2 hours.( soaking is optional) 
Cook soaked alasande kaalu in pressure cooker for 3 whistles .

Alasande kaalu will get cooked fast even without soaking.
(You can also transfer the washed kaalu in pressure cooker and add sufficient water and cook for 6 to 7 whistles.

Do not add salt while cooking 

Roast onion on direct open flame for few minutes.
Remove the skin and chop onion.

Grind boiled alasande kaalu,grated coconut,tamarind,rasam powder,jeera,onion together in a mixer grinder jar to a smooth paste adding sufficient water.
Transfer this paste to a kadai or pan,add sufficient water ( nearly 4 cups),salt,jaggery powder,curry leaves (karibevu//kadipatta),mix well.
Keep it for boiling and let it boil for 7 to 8 minutes.

Now prepare for seasoning (oggarane)

Heat 1 tablespoon of ghee in a laddle,once hot enough add 1 tablespoon of mustard seeds (sasive),jeera (jeerige//cumin seeds),asafoetida (hing//ingu).
When it stops spluttering pour over boiled saaru.
Serve hot saaru with cooked hot rice.
