Bansi rava avarekaalu uppittu ( wheat rava ) upma
Ingredients
Bansi rava ( wheat rava)—1 cupOna avare kaalu ( dry avare kaalu). Hyacinth beans// surti papdi lilva in hindi—-2 cups
NOTE you can use fresh or frozen beans.
Grated coconut—1/2 cup
Onion—1 medium
Green chillies—2
Curry leaves (karibevu//kadipatta)—few
Chopped coriander leaves (kothambari soppu)—2 tablespoon
Bhath powder or sambar powder or vanghi bhath powder —1 tablespoon ( you can use home made or any brand )
For seasoning (oggarane )
Mustard seeds (sasive)__1 teaspoon
Jeera (jeerige) cumin seeds—1 teaspoon
Channa dhal (kadale belle)—1 tablespoon
Urad dhal (uddina belle)—1 tablespoon
Asafoetida (hing)—1/4 teaspoon
Turmeric powder (arisina //haldi)—1/2 teaspoon
Sugar —1/2 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Lemon juice ( nimbehannina rasa)—1 tablespoon
Water- 3 cups or little more.
Oil—4 tablespoon
Method
Wash the dry avare kaalu and soak in water overnight .
Transfer it to a pressure cooker and cook for 4 to 5 whistles on medium flame.
Frozen beans may just take 5 to 6 minutes boiling.
Dry roast the bansi rava in a kadai or pan on medium flame until it turns light brown .
Keep aside .
Chop onion and slit the green chillies.
Now heat oil in a thick bottomed kadai or pan on medium flame,once hot enough add mustard seeds,when it crackles add jeera,channa and urad dhal,hing.
Sauté till dhals turns brown.
Now add the green chillies,curry leaves and chopped onion.
Fry till onion turns soft for a few minutes
Add in turmeric powder and sauté for a while.
Now add sugar ,bhath powder and keep stirring for a minute.
Finally add boiled avare kaalu along with cooked water .
Add salt and boil the water .
Add little more water in needed( you need 3 to 31/4 cups of water in total)
When the water starts boiling,add roasted rava little by little stirring all the time on low flame.,
Stir continuously so that lumps are not formed.
Cover with a lid and cook on medium flame for about 3 to 4 minutes.
Sit in between.
When uppittu is cooked add coconut grated,coriander leaves,and squeezed lemon juice.
Remove from stove .
Now uppittu is ready to serve.
Serve hot with chutney powder and curd.
For variation
You can use Bombay rava or raw rice rava.
