Huruli kaalu palya

Ingredients 

Huruli kaalu—( horse gram)—1 cup
Red chillies — 3 to 4 ( powder coarsely in mixy jar)
Tamarind(hunase hannu//imli)—small lemon size soaked in water 
Fresh grated coconut—2 tablespoon 
Jaggery powder( Bella //gud)—1 tablespoon 
Onion — 1 small ( finely chopped)

 Curry leaves( karibevu// kadipatta)—few
Salt to taste.

Meanasina pudi( saarina pudi // rasam powder ) —1 teaspoon
Turmeric powder(arisina//haldi)—1/2 teaspoon 


For tempering ( oggarane)

Oil— 3 tablespoon 


Mustard seeds(sasive)—1 teaspoon 
Jeerige—( jeera// cumin seeds)—1 teaspoon 
Channa dhal(kadale belle)—1 tablespoon 
Urad dhal( uddina belle)—1 tablespoon 

Method 

Soak washed huruli kaalu overnight or  for 6 to 7 hours,


Make sure there are no stones and dirt in kaalu.

Next morning rinse huruli kaalu again in water and  transfer to pressure cooker add 5 cups of water  and boil for 7 to 8 whistles.

Once the pressure reduces open the  cooker and drain water to a vessel which can be used for making saaru..

Now heat the oil in a kadai or pan ,on medium heat,


Once it is hot add mustard seeds,jeera,channa dhal,urad dhal curry leaves ,asafoetida.

Fry till done  and add red chilli powdered in mixy.fry for a while.





Then add finely chopped onions and turmeric sauté till onions are soft.
Now add boiled huruli kaalu,menasina pudi,jaggery,tamarind juice and keep stirring,on medium heat.
.

Finally add salt and fry for few more minutes. 

And finally add coconut.mix well .

Palya is ready to serve.
